当人们观察到的场景与自身的过往经历越相似，镜像神经元就越活跃，尤其是当这些场景与运动神经的活动相关的时候。所以，球迷往往会有下意识的“从众”行为：球队赢了就集体狂欢，输了就集体哭泣。
此外研究人员还发现，对那些“真球迷”而言，镜像神经元还有助于他们更好地“读懂”球赛。对比实验显示，在观赛的时候，那些“真球迷”能够更好地预测球路走向，此时，他们的镜像神经元比那些“伪球迷”更活跃。
维也纳医科大学脑研究中心的奥梅拉·瓦伦蒂说：“镜像神经元能使我们凭直觉捕捉到其他人的意图，而且我们可以根据过往的经验更好地理解这些意图或行为。”
研究人员说，对镜像神经元的研究开始于30年前，如今还处于初步阶段。深入研究镜像神经元可以揭示人类社交互动和模仿学习的奥秘，比如，婴儿学习成人的表情就是因为有镜像神经元，而幼儿自闭症可能与镜像神经元功能失调有关，刺激镜像神经元功能还将有助于中风偏瘫病人恢复行动能力。
