南温带气候类型主要包括温带海洋性气候和温带大陆性气候两种
温带海洋性气候主要分布在南、北纬40°~60°的大陆西岸,南温带的温带海洋性气候主要分布在南美洲南部的西海岸,大洋洲的南部地区。这里终年受来自海洋的西风带的影响,所以全年温和湿润,降水季节分配比较均匀。植被类型主要为温带落叶阔叶林。
温带大陆性气候主要分布在南美洲南部的东部地区。南温带的温带大陆性气候成因和北温带的温带大陆性气候类型的成因不同。南半球没有像亚欧大陆那样宽广的大陆,所以其降水稀少的温带大陆性气候不是因距海远造成的,一般是由于处于高大山脉的背风坡造成的。如南美南端的温带大陆性气候是在西风带的影响下,处于安第斯山的背风坡,所以降水稀少,形成温带草原和荒漠景观。
南温带的海洋生物的生长和发育条件与北温带相似。海洋内植物生长繁茂,巨型藻类多,浮游生物也很丰富。南温带在南半球是海洋动物zui多的地带,那里生活着南、北温带都可见到的动物类型,如海狗、海豹、鲸,还有刀鱼、鰯鱼、小鳁鱼、鲨鱼等。每逢冬季,有来自南方的海洋动物到此越冬,当夏季时,又有热带海洋动物前来肥育。受离岸风的影响,在非洲大陆西南部和南美洲的秘鲁沿海有上升流存在,因此深层海水中的有机物质和营养盐类随着上升流来到海水表层,这使此地浮游生物大量繁殖,为鱼类提供了丰富的饵料,因而鱼类在此积聚,形成南半球重要的捕捞区。
大陆水平自然带是纬度地带性和经度地带性两种规律共同作用的结果。在前者占优势的地区,自然带沿纬线方向伸展;后者 占优势的地区,自然带沿经线方向伸展;两者作用相近的地区,自然带与经纬线交叉。山地垂直自然带的分布随高度而变化。
自然带[1]  的形成主要与地球表面的太阳辐射能在各纬度分布不均有关,在各大陆和大洋都形成一系列自然带。由于大陆自然带的形成不仅受纬度热力分带的影响,而且受到海陆分布、地势起伏的干扰,所以大陆自然带比大洋表层的自然带复杂得多。
